The MTN Group Is Under Investigation For Illegally Transferring Over $12 Billion Out Of Nigeria

Somehow it seems the MTN Group just can’t catch a break in Nigeria. It’s like a one step forward, two steps back thing. First, it was the brouhaha with the Nigerian Communications Commission, then there’s that N16 billion copyright law suit that was filed by the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON). And now? Now, the Nigerian Senate is investigating the allegation that MTN illegally transferred $12 billion dollars out of Nigeria over a 10-year period.

Senator Dino Melaye made the allegation last Thursday at the Senate and requested permission to investigate further. In his statement, he said, “MTN Nigeria paid a sum of $284.9 million on the 6th of February, 2001, to purchase their licence of operations in this country. Between 2006 and 2016, through four Nigerian Banks and a serving minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, MTN moved over $12 billion out of Nigeria. That is about half of our external reserves. If I get the nod of the Senate I will want to bring a substantive motion on the next legislative day with substantiated facts to buttress this position.”

He closed by saying, “All hands must be on deck to recover every loot in the country. We are in a precarious situation and now is the time to recover every stolen money in the country.” As expected, his request was approved by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

This is the second time there’s been speculation about MTN Nigeria’s books. Sometime last year, Premium Times carried out an investigation regarding this same tax evasion issue and it was revealed MTN evades tax by using transfer pricing to move their profits offshore, and creating artificial operating costs. If the Senate’s investigation proves this allegation to be true, it’ll mean MTN has been evading tax in Nigeria – its biggest market – for about 10 years.

Put on your seat belts, guys. We’re in for another ride.

Twitter on the brink of being sold

Following several reports that Twitter is on the brink of being sold, the company’s stocks increased up to 21 percent on Friday. According to CNBC, potential buyers like Salesforce, Google, Verizon and other top tech companies are interested in the data that is generated by the company’s active users.

So far, this year has been a turbulent one for Twitter with 30 percent drop in stocks. Experts observed that it is due to a decline in user growth and weak ad revenue in the last two years. Most advertisers now prefer Facebook and a great number of people find it difficult to use Twitter.

Some industry analysts observed that Salesforce will be the best fit if it eventually acquires the company. Even though Google or Salesforce is yet to release any official statement up to this moment, Salesforce’s chief digital evangelist, Vala Afshar made known his opinion about Twitter in a tweet.

The company has been struggling to meet up with newer social media sites since Jack Dorsey became the CEO two years ago. In a recent move, social videos were introduced as a result of deals like the National Football League games on Thursday nights which has a slight positive effect to its previous state.

The oncoming general election debates are set to be live-streamed on Twitter. There are speculations that the acquisition deal could be finalized before the year runs to an end

Some specs to look out for when buying an Android smartphone

Just like real life, there are some features that you should take a look at before purchasing any smartphone.
These are the things that will keep your smartphone going and running smoothly without giving you any headache.

So now we take a look at some of the components that a smartphone should have before you consider buying it.

1) a battery of atleast 3,000mah: battery is the most important component of a smartphone, without a healthy and high capacity battery, you may not enjoy your phone the way you suppose to, because you will need to charge it too many times a day, especially if you use it constantly like me.

2) RAM and CPU (random access memory) : the RAM is always a very important factor when buying a new phone, RAM of atleast 2GB is recommended. With this you don't have to worry about hanging or your phone not running smoothly. As for the CPU, you should consider a 1.4ghz quad core processor.

3) OTA Update (over the air update) : this is the wireless delivery of new software or data to mobile phones and tablets. With this function you are sure that you are been updated with latest information, security patches and newest version of your mobile phone operating system. If this function is not present, you may never be able to upgrade to the latest Android version available, thus making your phone outdated.

4) 4G LTE network : 4G LTE is a network that provides speed of up to 10x what 3G network offers, so imagine 10x of 3G, just imagine how fast it will be. although 4G LTE is not currently available in all parts of Nigeria, but you should consider it. Because when it starts being available you will not be left behind.

These are far the most important things to consider, and I hope that after you have finish reading this article, you will gain some knowledge about smartphones and how to choose the Best for yourself.

whatsapp now supports user mention feature in group chat

This is one of the features we’ve been expecting WhatsApp to add for a very long time is the supports for mention in group chat. “Mention” features allow you to specifically address a contact inside a group to get their attention.

Whether online or offline, the contact will get a notification of the mention. When you're in a group chat, try typing the symbol @ and you'll get a list of all the participants in that chat. You can tap any of them or just type the first letters of anyone's name and it'll narrow down to them.

Select them and the name will show up as hyperlinked (blue) in the text entry box. Once you send the text, the hyperlink will still be there in the sent message.

Anyone can tap the hyperlinked name to get to the specific contact's page details.
This feature is now live in the latest version of  WhatsApp beta v2.16.272

Meanwhile, we are still patiently   waiting for the video calling feature.

Tecno Mobile finally unvielled the look of phantom 6 and 6+ monster devices on their twitter handle

There was a lot of drama on Tecno twitter handle yesterday and a lot of fans actually thought they’ve been hacked… Tecno Mobile Nigeria had earlier taken to twitter to conduct a poll that had trouble written all over it.
This is a screenshot of the poll

But its their new way of announcing their incoming Phantom beast with the Hashtag, #BeautyAndTheBeast. This is one of TECNO’s most impressive marketing strategy, and it is quite commendable.

However, they’ve unveiled the beauty and the beast out of the mask, their very own newest monster device in the phantom series which will be launched in Dubai this September 25th, 2016.

Lots of truths are surrounding this device but let us wait until the day of the launching. You can check out some of the rumored spec and Photos here.

I guess you are already prepared to witness the launch and I can only imagine the price of the next Phantom device from the third heavens.

Nice marketing strategy Tecno Mobile Nigeria.

a better alternative to Google Plus custom URL

Until google allow's us to choose a better URL for our Google Plus page there will always be a problem,
They call it a custom URL but you will never be able to change the default one to your choice, instead you will be asked to enter some characters.

Personally, I've got many problems with them, the most recent one is for this blog you are currently reading. I created this blog using a different name so the Google Plus page also beared the same name. So after re-branding to this current name,  I also changed my page name to the new name.  When it was time to get a custom URL for my page, I noticed that it was still in the old name,  and there is no way I can change it.
You should know that the default URL is always very lengthy and to complicated to even remember or tell someone about, usually something like this, ( https://plus.google.com/116312136656195743385 ) I decided not to change it, rather I searched for an alternative. I found out that using a URL shortner service like,  goo.gl bit.ly and so on will be even better and easier to tell your fans and other people about it.
I just registered an account with http://goo.gl , copied my page URL and shortened it, after that,  I renamed it to something like http://goo.gl/geeknify so if somebody visit the link, It will redirect to my page. as you can see it's still better and also easier to remember. Atleast for a while.

I think I've made a little sense with my tutorial. If you find yourself where I was,  you should consider the tutorial and wait to see if google will change their mind.
If you have a WordPress blog, you can even get a redirect to your page with your custom domain. E.G http://geeknify.com/googlepage So if someone click it, it will redirect to your Google Plus page.

If you have any Question, you are free to ask. We will give you a reply as soon as possible.

Airtel 1.5GB for N50 increased to N200

It's barely a week after airtel reduced their 20gb for 200 naira social bundle,  and now another bad news have reached us that the 1.5GB for 50naira has Been kicked to 200 naira,  which is bad,  considering the current economic situation. Tho the 500mb for 25 naira still remains the same.

If you can remember when Etisalat launched their night plan of 2GB for 200 naira and most of us were complaining about it, now airtel have joined them.

It seems the economy have also hit airtel, or what do you think?
Anyway, am not surprised. We have been used to their greedy behavior.
